Press Release

21 April 2021

Under the banner of the We, The People movement, Constitution Hill is catalysing a national call for South Africans to articulate their dreams, hopes and ambitions for the South Africa they want. For today and for generations to come.

On the 27th of April 1994, millions of South Africans took to the polls to exercise their right to vote for the very first time — filled with the hope and promise of our newfound democracy.

Twenty-seven years later, this Freedom Day, Constitution Hill is calling on all South Africans to once more articulate their dreams, hopes and aspirations. Let us recommit to collectively build our  constitutional democracy in which the human dignity, equality and freedom of everyone is recognised.

For the first time, the Will of the People will be projected onto the iconic walls of the historic site of prisons where so many freedom fighters were imprisoned right next to the Constitutional Court.  The Court now stands as evidence of the achievement of human will and as a beacon of light and hope.  This will remind South Africans of the power we have to use our voice to strengthen our democracy.

The conversation will be fuelled on social media, community radio stations, grassroots activations around the country, on national electronic billboards that have been generously donated by Tractor Outdoor provided as well as through a sound and light installation on Constitution Square in front of the Constitutional Court as well as an interactive Will of the People Wall on the perimeter wall of the Hill (Queen Street, Hillbrow).

The light projection and sound installation will be open to the public free of charge from Freedom Day, Tuesday 27 April until Sunday 2 May from 6-9 PM. The entire site will also be open to the public for free all day on 27 April. Secure and free undercover parking will be available all week.

“We, the People converted the staircases of the old fort prison into towers of light so that we can transcend our pain and divisions and enable all to enjoy human dignity, equality and freedom. People longing for freedom and justice can see their own words beautifully projected onto the light towers. Quite literally it is spectacular!”
